SM Caen’s star defender Alexander Djiku is suffering from a heel injury that will have him out of action until November – a real blow for coach Patrice Garande that endangers the Normandy club’s strong start to the season.
Djiku arrived at Caen from Bastia over the summer and has proven a revelation in defence as the Normandy club have strung together a fine early-season run.
However, the 23-year-old has been struck down by a heel injury and will undergo surgery on Thursday ahead of a lay-off that will see him side-lined until November.
Djiku was absent for Saturday’s 1-0 loss in Nantes – a result that ended a three-match win streak – due to a calf complaint and he was sorely missed, leaving fans to wonder whether Garande will be able to find an adequate replacement, with veteran stopper Romain Genevois and defensive midfielder Baïssama Sankoh the most likely to deputise.
Caen’s next Djiku-less test comes in the form of promoted Amien SC, who travel to the Stade Michel d’Ornano on Saturday
