Chelsea have made an enquiry for AC Milan centre back Alessio Romagnoli.
The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the best up and coming defenders in Italy and only joined Milan last summer from Roma for £19.8million.
Milan are reluctant to sell the Italy U21 international. The stylish left-sided centre-back has also been linked with Arsenal in the past, and much will depend how high Chelsea are willing to go with their bid.
Romagnoli, who could provide stern competition for the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma, was dubbed the new Alessandro Nesta upon his arrival at the San Siro.
Chelsea are wary that Kalidou Koulibaly will sign a new contract at Napoli after his club rejected Chelsea’s £40m bid while Torino’s Nikola Maksimovic remains on their list of targets too.
Blues boss Antonio Conte is adamant that Chelsea remain active in the transfer market.
‘We are waiting for the right solution to improve Chelsea. We need to sign some players, we are working together,’ added the Italian after overseeing two victories to kick-start their Premier League campaign.
‘I think now is very difficult to put a real target for the squad. We are starting after a bad season, the players are the same [as last season].’
