Radamel Falcao’s early goal was enough for AS Monaco to defeat Angers SCO 1-0 on Saturday and allow the Ligue 1 Conforama champions to steal a march on their rivals for a podium finish.
AS Monaco 1-0 Angers SCO
Monaco kicked off knowing a win could help them reduce the gap to leaders Paris Saint-Germain to single digits, and it did not take them long to try to take advantage of PSG’s unexpected slip.
Keita Baldé moved down the right before picking out Djibril Sidibé’s run – his wickedly struck cross was met by Falcao, who bulleted home his 14th goal of the league season (2′).
The Colombia international forward would have had a second had Alexandre Letellier not backpeddaled smartly to claim his lob (15′). The Angers goalkeeper then watched in relief as a Joao Moutinho free-kick was met by Adama Diakhaby, who flicked a header just wide (27′).
Angers, who started the game second-from-bottom of the table, eventually created their first opening of the game eight minutes after the break. Billy Ketkeophomphone picked out Karl Toko Ekambi in the penalty area, but the Cameroon international’s low shot was seized by Danijel Subasic (53′).
The Croatia international goalkeeper stopped another Toko Ekambi effort (73′) and was then fortunate to see Angelo Fulgini screw a shot wide after Kamil Glik’s clearance ricocheted into his path off Jemerson (75′).
After having the first laugh, Falcao very nearly had the last too, but saw Letellier again thwart him (79′). Second-placed Monaco claimed the three points, and are now nine behind PSG and a point clear of Olympique de Marseille and three ahead of Olympique Lyonnais.
THE PLAYER: Radamel Falcao
The former Porto and Atletico Madrid striker just keeps on producing the goods for his club. Monaco may not win the title again, but they will finish in top three if their prolific forward keeps scoring at this rate.
THE STAT: 4
This was Monaco’s first win in four competitive matches after three straight defeats.
