When Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford, he was supposed to be the man to return Manchester United to winning ways after three disappointing years under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.
Mourinho’s reputation may have been dented by his final season at Chelsea, but with money to spend and his dream job he was expected to at least challenge for titles.
But, after 10 games in charge, Mourinho’s United have not only failed to improve on Van Gaal and Moyes’ teams – he is actually performing worse.Premier League games in charge, United lost three times, including at Anfield and the Etihad, picking up 17 points out of a possible 30, and starting a poor season that would lead to his eventual sacking in April 2014.
But that record is two points better than this season, which again sees United in eighth place after 10 games, with defeats by Manchester City, Watford and Chelsea.
The current United team have also scored four goals fewer than Moyes’ side did – a damning statistic given how dull the 2013-14 Old Trafford vintage was considered – and conceded only one goal fewer.Louis van Gaal’s start to life at Old Trafford was even worse, with only 13 points at this stage having lost to Swansea, Leicester and Manchester City.
However, Van Gaal’s side still managed more goals in their first 10 games than the current one, and in his second season the Dutchman had United in the top four at the same stage, on 20 points and only two points off the top.
In contrast, this season United are actually as close to the relegation zone as they are to the Premier League summit, with eight points separation in each direction.Mourinho spending £89m on Paul Pogba, investing in the bumper wages of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and splashing a combined £56m on Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly, the former of whom has scarcely been seen in a United shirt.
Van Gaal was also given money to spend, but Moyes, whose only signing in his first transfer window saw Marouane Fellaini arrive from Everton, is the manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era who made the best start to his United reign.
