Former France international and Monaco, Inter and Marseille midfielder Sabri Lamouchi has signed on as head coach at Stade Rennais FC, filling the void left by Christian Gourcuff’s departure on Tuesday.
Lamouchi, whose successful playing career transformed into coaching positions with the Côte d’Ivoire and Qatari club El Jaish SC, signed a two-year contract – with an option for a supplementary year – with Stade Rennais FC on Wednesday.
His arrival comes just a day after new general manager and vice-president Olivier Létang relieved Brittany coaching legend Christian Gourcuff of his duties at the helm of the club’s first team despite a marked recent uptick in results – four wins in a row in all competitions – that followed a slow start to the season.
Lamouchi has never coached in Ligue 1 Conforama before, but was reportedly a target for FC Nantes, as well Belgian giants Standard Liege, in the off-season. The 45-year-old will take charge of his first training session on Thursday, his first chance to get to know the squad of players – which includes Gourcuff’s son Yoann – he will be looking to establish in the top half of the table.
Ten days to work
Currently in the middle of an international break, the new boss has until Saturday, November 18, when his side travel to promoted club RC Strasbourg Alsace, to get his ducks in a row.
