Mario Gotze has admitted he made the wrong choice when he joined Bayern Munich in 2013.
Gotze and his Borussia Dortmund team-mates will face Bayern in the German Super Cup on Sunday August 14. He returned to Dortmund on a four-year contract this summer after a difficult three seasons at the Allianz Arena.
The 24-year-old suggested he was particularly keen to beat his former side.
‘I am ready and want to play as soon as possible,’ Gotze said.
‘Sunday is an important game that we really want to win. I hope the sporting aspect will take the main stage, even though it is obviously a special game for me.
‘With the experience I have now, I would make the decision [to leave Dortmund] at a later stage, but I wanted to take the risk at the time and make the next step. Looking back at it, I would have made a different decision now.’
Gotze managed 22 goals in 73 Bundesliga appearances during his three seasons with Bayern, but never truly settled.
He struggled to establish himself in the first team and often found himself used as a substitute by Pep Guardiola.
Gotze made only 14 appearances in the league last season and only played the full 90 minutes seven times.
The midfielder was involved at both the World Cup in Brazil and Euro 2016 in France. He scored the winning goal after coming on as a substitute as Germany won the World Cup against Argentina in 2014.
