New Olympique de Marseille signing Konstantinos ‘Kostas’ Mitroglou has described Ligue 1 Conforama as “one of the best leagues in Europe” after completing his summer transfer from SL Benfica.

Mitroglou has played in England, Germany and Portugal – with Fulham, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Benfica – as well as his native Greece, but he thinks the French top-flight compares favourably with anything he’s seen in the English Premier League, German Bundesliga or Portuguese Primeira Liga.

‘Important championship’

“In France, I will play in an important championship,” said the 29-year-old, who won back-to-back league titles in Portugal over the past two campaigns. “The French League is one of the best in Europe, with very good players. I can’t wait to play my first game.”

Mitroglou, capped 54 times by Greece, should make his Marseille bow against Stade Rennais FC next Sunday. Ligue 1 Conforama, meanwhile, has overtaken the Primeira Liga in the latest UEFA coefficient ranking, and with Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain leading a host of significant arrivals, the league could be set to even climb further this season.
