Jérémy Toulalan’s early own-goal handed Stade Rennais FC a 1-0 win over Girondins de Bordeaux on Friday as the Breton club registered their fourth successive win in all competitions.
Stade Rennais FC 1-0 Girondins de Bordeaux
Winless in four Bordeaux travelled to Brittany seeking a win that would put their European challenge back on track. The bad fortune that has followed them in recent weeks travelled with them however.
Former Bordeaux midfielder Wahbi Khazri’s free-kick, delivered from near the left-hand corner flag, flicked off Toulalan’s head at the near post and flashed beyond another ex, Benoît Costil, who left Roazhon Park to join Les Girondins last summer (11′).
Alexandre Mendy, who played his football along the road at En Avant Guingamp before being reunited with Gourvennec at Bordeaux, poked wide from close range when he seemed destined to equalise shortly afterwards as the visitors sought to respond (18′).
Mendy might also have levelled on 57 minutes, but sent his lob over the crossbar having done the hard work in rounding Rennes ‘keeper Tomas Koubek. At the opposite end, Khazri very nearly came back to haunt his former club only to see his well-struck first-time shot flash over too (59′).
Costil prevented his former employers doubling their lead by moving smartly to push away Léa Siliki’s drive from the edge of the box (63′). The provided Mendy with the opportunity to be the hero in added time.
Two minutes into time at the end of the game, Mendy turned to find himself in front of goal and unmarked. He attempted to sidefoot into the corner, but instead sent his effort the wrong side of the post (90+2’).
THE PLAYER: Wahbi Khazri
How often does a former player return to make his ex-club regret letting them go? Khazri’s departed Bordeaux to head to England with his head held high, and has returned to France looking as good as he did when he left. His wicked delivery turned the game and he might have added a second.
THE STAT: 12
This was Rennes’ first Ligue 1 Conforama win over Bordeaux in 12 attempts.
