Federer has often proved he is one of sport’s Mr Nice Guys, and the Swiss superstar reinforced that this week by paying a surprise visit to the players of PSG… moments after they had inflicted a last-gasp defeat upon his team Basle.
Federer was watching from the stands as the French giants faced Basle in a Champions League Group A clash at St Jakob Park.
PSG emerged victorious courtesy of a 90th minute Thomas Meunier goal, breaking the hearts of the Swiss swiss league leaders.his native team come agonisingly close but leaving with nothing, Federer still found time to head down to the dressing room to surprise the stars of PSG.
Federer, unarguably one of tennis’s all time greats, posed for a picture along with PSG captain Thiago Silva, Marco Verratti, Lucas Moura and Marquinhos.
The players, suited and booted following their Champions League heroics, were all smiles as they posed with Federer.
The 35-year-old is still using his time to prepare for his tennis comeback after not stepping onto a court since his Wimbledon semi-final defeat to Milos Raonic back in July.comeback from a knee injury and is looking to return in time for next year’s Australian Open.
On the pitch PSG secured easy qualification from Group A by snatching all three points from under the noses of Basle and inflicting the first home defeat of the season upon the Swiss side.
The French champions took the lead on the 43 minute mark, thanks to a solid right-footed effort from midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
Federer’s Basle did manage to claw their way back into the tie after equalising through Luca Zuffi with just under 15 minutes left to play.for the Swiss side who, after seeing Geoffroy Serey Die sent off after receiving two yellows in quick succession, had their hearts broken in the last minute of the tie as Thomas Meunier’s effort from outside the box sailed into the back of the net.
Basle have taken one point from a possible 12 in this season’s Champions League, with one game left to play.
PSG however have ensured progression to the last 16 for the fifth time in the last five seasons.
