Neven Subotic’s second goal in as many games helped Saint-Etienne beat Guingamp 2-0 as Les Verts extended their unbeaten sequence in Ligue 1 Conforama to eight games.
AS Saint-Etienne 2-0 EA Guingamp
Jean-Louis Gasset has done a great job at Saint-Etienne and they’re now ensconced in the top half of the table. Gasset’s team dominated throughout and could have won by more against a Guingamp side that have managed only one win in the last 10 league games.
ASSE had already spurned a trio of decent chances before they made the breakthrough in the 29thminute. Rémy Cabella’s corner wasn’t dealt with by the Guingamp defence and Robert Beric was able to cross for Subotic to side-foot the ball into the back of the net.
Guingamp had hardly seen the ball in the first half, though Antoine Kombouaré’s side had a chance to equalise (68′) when Stéphane Ruffier saved from Marcus Thuram, who had got the better of Mathieu Debuchy, the Ligue 1 Conforama player of the month for February.
Eleven minutes from time ASSE wrapped up the points. Playmaker Cabella cut in from the left, raced into the box, held off Jonathan Martins Pereira and beat Kalle Johnsson to score his fourth of the league season. Saint-Etienne could yet muscle their way into the chase for European qualification.
THE PLAYER: Neven Subotic
The Serbian defender, 29, has already proved himself a high-calibre signing. Brought in from Borussia Dortmund, Subotic has played every minute since making his debut in the 2-1 success against Caen in Week 23 and is yet to finish on the losing side. To add to his impact, Subotic has also managed to score against Rennes and Guingamp.
THE STAT: 8
Eight games without defeat is Saint-Etienne’s longest undefeated run in the top flight since nine in a row between February and April 2015. Only Monaco (15) are on a longer unbeaten run at the moment.
