Goals from François Kamano and substitutes Alexandre Mendy and Jonathan Cafu were enough for unbeaten Bordeaux to beat Guingamp 3-1 and climb to third in the Ligue 1 Conforama table.
Girondins de Bordeaux 3-1 EA Guingamp
It was a dramatic match and one that saw both sides miss a penalty before Kamano opened the scoring. A couple of minutes in Marcus Thuram, Lilian’s son, was brought down by home captain Jérémy Toulalan. Visiting skipper Jimmy Briand took the spot kick and Benoît Costil dived well to his left to save.
Malcom, Bordeaux’s best attacker this season, had a volley saved by Karl-Johan Johnsson before Les Girondins were awarded a penalty as Kamano was felled. Johnsson saved Nicolas De Préville’s kick, but Kamano followed up to beat the Swedish goalkeeper.
Guingamp equalised a minute into the second half as Thuram worked wonders to beat Toulalan and played in Yannis Salibur, whose curling shot deflected off Lukas Lerarger and flew past Costil.
Either side could have scored before Mendy struck 15 minutes from time. Malcom took the ball past Lucas Deaux before releasing Mendy. The forward used Youssouf Sabaly as a decoy before firing into the net.
In stoppage time Cafu scored his first since joining from Ludogorets. Younouses Sankharé did the legwork as he carried the ball 40 metres before playing a perfect pass to the Brazilian forward, who side-footed past Costil to seal the points and take Bordeaux’s record to four wins and three draws.
THE PLAYER: Alexandre Mendy
The powerful forward joined Bordeaux from Guingamp in the summer and made the most of an opportunity off the bench to score his second Ligue 1 Conforama goal of the season.
THE STAT: 14
Bordeaux are unbeaten in their last 14 Ligue 1 Conforama matches (7W, 7D) since losing 2-1 at Nice on April 2 2017. That unbeaten record will be tested next Saturday when they travel to Paris Saint-Germain.
